Day 17...Mile Hammock Bay to Morehead City Yacht Basin, Morehead City, N.C.

SUNDAY, APRIL 15, 2012
We left at 8:00 a.m. today because we were going to have a short day and stop at Swansboro, which was only 15 ½ miles.
There are all kinds of captains on the water. Most captains suffer in silence when other boaters are less than courteous.  One particular captain tells it like it is.  The other day we heard him tell a huge, luxury yacht that he was trying to contact, “You mean that million dollar boat didn’t come with a radio.” when they didn’t respond to his calls.  Today when another boat went by him too fast we heard him say, “You could’ve throttled back more captain.”  I admire his gumption.
As we passed Camp LeJeune, there seemed to be a graveyard of armored personnel carriers.  We also passed a sign that said to stop if the light was on.  Read on to find out why.

When we got to Swansboro, the wind was a steady 20 knots and was gusting up to 28 knots.  Since there would be no protection from the waves at the dock, we decided not to stop.  We kept going with Morehead City as our next destination.
While we crossed Bogue Sound, we passed families pulling boats into shallow water and enjoying themselves by sunning, digging and walking on the narrow spoil islands.   There were several kite surfers trying to enjoy the day too, but the wind seemed to be too strong.

Just before we made the turn to go under bridges #2 and #3 to enter the marina, what should cross our bow but this cargo ship headed to the Morehead City Terminals.  It was so close it took two photos to see the whole ship.  We got out of its way of course.

We finally made it to the very comfortable Morehead City Yacht Basin (still in N.C.).   The staff was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and patient.

Helpful Dwayne steered us to a very close local restaurant that he said was the best in the area.  Floyd’s 1921 was excellent.  I had my mouth set for seafood until I saw liver and onions on the menu.  That made me very happy.  It was so good!!!!!  Gary’s ribs were very good also.  Gary described the pound cake cheesecake with strawberries on top as decadent.  It was well worth stopping here for the food.

According to the chartplotter, we traveled 44 miles in 7 hours 25 minutes.

The photo theme for today is birdhouses.
